- DATABASE.0
- U.S. Zipcodes
-
- The enclosed file, DATABASE.0, contains 1478 entries. It consists of
- those cities in the United States with urban populations at or greater than
- 20,000. Urban populations are defined as thos cities which are incorporated
- as cities, villages and towns. Sources for this information are the NeW York
- Telephone Company, U.S. Postal Service and the U.S. Bureau of the Census.
- Cities not listed, did not have a minimum of 20,000 population according to the
- 1980 Bureau of the Census data.
-
- As you probably know, the MSYS BBS written by Mike Pechura, WA8BXN, offers
- the "G" command used for user-searches on specific files based upon specific
- words and/or phrases. The default database (which does not exist in the
- distribution of MSYS) is DATABASE.0. This database, therefore, could be
- incorporated as DATABASE.0 and would, therefore, allow users to search for
- proper zipcodes cross-referenced to the applicable cities/states. As example,
- this would serve the NTS community when sending NTS traffic with the syntax
- ST <zipcode> @ NTSxx
- if the zipcode was unknown to him or her. A quick access of this file with
- the "G" command would probably yield the info being sought.
-
- To use this database, simply copy this 36KB file, already labeled
- DATABASE.0, to the FILES subdirectory of your MSYS BBS. Its as simple as that.
- The information is, then, immediately available to your users.
-
- Its also recommended that you provide, in that same FILES subdirectory,
- a quick HELP file (perhaps called DATABASE.HLP) which would list the contents
- of various databases you migh have available. In this way, users could choose
- databases other than the default database (DATABASE.0) on which to search.
-
- Although there's no guaranty offered for accuracy, a substantial degree
- of caution was used in the preparation of this data. If users can't locate
- a city with this database, odds are that the population IN 1980 was under the
- 20,000 cut-off point.
-
- If you find this useful, please let me know. I'm thinking, next of
- including the same data for Canadian cities since they, too, use zipcodes for
- NTS routing on packet.
